The Kyrgyz som is 30 years old! Happy birthday national currency

Kyrgyz soum – 30 years! On May 10, 1993, the national currency was put into use, and it became the official means of payment in all regions of our country!

For the birthday of the national currency, we have prepared 5 interesting facts about our som!

1. The manufacturer of the national currency is determined on the basis of a tender. Today, the sum is made by the English “De La Rue” and the French “Oberthur Fiduciaire” companies. Coins are issued by the Kazakh Mint;

2. The som is the first currency (except the ruble) introduced in post-Soviet countries. The national currency of Kazakhstan was introduced on November 15, 1993, and in Uzbekistan – on July 1, 1994, and in Tajikistan – from May 10, 1995 to November 29, 2000, the Tajik ruble was used.
3. If it were not for the promptness of domestic bankers, our currency would be named differently. Because neighboring Kazakhstan also wanted to call its currency som. “Som” is translated from Turkish as “ruble”. But our country managed to do it faster. And Kazakh bankers were looking for another word to name their money.
4. Som consists of 100% cotton. Special cotton papers of various denominations are produced in France and Great Britain. During the production of paper for banknotes, special protective elements, including watermarks, are made.
5. In 2010, the international banknote community recognized the 5 thousand note as the most beautiful note in the world.
